Henry William DeSaussure papers, 1795-1838.

Papers consist mainly of correspondence but also include genealogical materials and other items. Correspondence (1795-1838) of Henry W. DeSaussure includes letters (1796-1803) from cousins in Switzerland discussing family history; a letter (1820) from John C. Calhoun regarding slavery, the union and slave-holding states, and the "Missouri question;" correspondence (1796) among Edward Neufville, Henry W. DeSaussure, Edward Rutledge, Charles C. Pinckney, and Timothy Ford regarding a contention between DeSaussure and Neufville, and DeSaussure's refusal to engage in a duel; a letter (1806) from Henry A. DeSaussure at Princeton College to his mother discussing family affairs and sermons of Massillon; and a letter (1807) to Henry A. DeSaussure from John Eager Howard, Jr. in Baltimore (Md.) mainly concerning the suicide of their former Princeton classmate Charles W. Monk in Montreal (Canada). Also included are letters (1795) between Edmund Randolph and DeSaussure concerning his appointment as director of the U.S. Mint and his resignation. Additional letters discuss family matters, Revolutionary War claims, nullification, and other topics. Other correspondents include Francis Kinloch, Susan DeSaussure, and Robert Y. Hayne. A handwritten copy of Henry W. DeSaussure's "Memoir of the American Branch of the Family of DeSaussure" (1836) was probably transcribed by his grandson Wilmot G. DeSaussure (1822-1886). Other items include a contract (1797) between John Appleton and DeSaussure & Ford describing specifications for the construction of a house on Sullivan's Island (S.C.); receipts; printed materials, including a leaflet (1835) or fragment about resolutions made by citizens of Charleston (S.C.) with regard to slavery and anti-slavery societies ("incendiaries"); an overseer's agreement (1806) between Henry W. DeSaussure and Thomas Riggs detailing the terms of Riggs' employment at the Bee Hive Plantation; and accounts (1795) for sales of rice at Vallence Plantation.
